Xbox and PlayStation Appear to Be Quietly Backing Down From Multiplatform Marketing Beats
Xbox has stopped tagging PS5 and Switch 2 in a new Minecraft Dungeons 2 trailer, while a fresh Sony ad rebrands Marvel's Wolverine, Ghost of Yotei and more as PS5-only. PushSquare and IGN read the shift as both console makers doubling down on exclusivity messaging.

Microsoft and Sony appear to be pulling back on cross-platform promotion of their biggest games, according to a new IGN report and a fresh read from PushSquare. The shift shows up in two adjacent but distinct marketing beats: a new Minecraft Dungeons 2 trailer uploaded by Xbox no longer mentions PS5 or Nintendo Switch 2, and a new Sony "It Happens on PS5" campaign leans heavily on the "only on PlayStation 5" line for Marvel's Wolverine, Ghost of Yotei, God of War Laufey, Saros, Gran Turismo 7 and Astro Bot.
The Xbox change is the more conspicuous one. As PushSquare's Sammy Smith first flagged, the latest Minecraft Dungeons 2 trailer on the official Xbox YouTube channel lists only Xbox Series X|S and PC. Two earlier trailers for the game, from March and June, both advertised every platform, including PS5, Steam, Switch and Switch 2. A slightly different cut uploaded by IGN still mentions those platforms, and a separate Fable teaser posted by Xbox this weekend carries no platform tags at all.
That behaviour is a notable reversal for Xbox. Earlier this year at Summer Game Fest, Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty told Xbox Wire that Xbox Showcase trailers would keep including PS5 logos for multiplatform releases, only for then-newly-installed CEO Asha Sharma to publicly call the decision a "miss" on social media and promise to course-correct. The new Minecraft Dungeons 2 trailer is the first clean test of whether the company is following through. IGN's Cade Onder argues it is.
Sony's angle is older but louder. Earlier in the year, internal town halls confirmed that PlayStation has stopped bringing single-player first-party games like Ghost of Yotei to PC, after roughly half a decade of porting Horizon Forbidden West and The Last of Us Part 2 to storefronts like Steam. PlayStation is still supporting PC through live-service titles such as Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls and Helldivers 2, but the marketing has flipped back to PS5-first. The new commercial ends with the line "These moments don't happen anywhere else. So come and make the unthinkable happen. Only on PS5," and stacks gameplay for Wolverine, Ghost of Yotei and the others under a single "PlayStation 5 exclusive" banner.
The bigger picture is that both platform holders are publicly hedging the multiplatform message they spent 2024 and 2025 publicly building. Xbox's strategy still looks "a bit wishy-washy," Onder writes, because Microsoft has only formally locked in permanent exclusivity for Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution. The Elder Scrolls 6 and the Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters remain officially unconfirmed on a per-platform basis.
What changes immediately is the trail players have to follow. With Sony back on "only on PS5" branding and Xbox scrubbing rival-platform logos from its own trailers, it now takes longer to tell whether a Microsoft game will actually ship on PlayStation 5, or whether a Sony first-party game will silently cross to PC years later.
