US Army 3rd Infantry Division Confirms 4-Day GTA 6 Pass as Reenlistment Incentive for Soldiers Who Sign for Two More Years

The US Army's 3rd Infantry Division has officially confirmed that soldiers who reenlist for at least two years between August 1 and November 14, 2026 will receive a four-day pass timed to the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, with the unit's career counselor reporting 20 soldiers have already taken the offer.

US Army 3rd Infantry Division Confirms 4-Day GTA 6 Pass as Reenlistment Incentive for Soldiers Who Sign for Two More Years

The US Army's 3rd Infantry Division has confirmed it is offering a four-day pass in November 2026 to soldiers who reenlist for at least two years, with the leave specifically timed to the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6.

The so-called "Special Reenlistment Incentive" memo, dated July 28, was first shared publicly by the US Army WTF! Moments account on Instagram and is now confirmed on the record by the division. Lt. Col. Angel Tomko told PC Gamer that the offer is unique to the 3rd Infantry Division's 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion and is not an Army-wide program.

According to Tomko, the idea came from a new career counselor within the battalion who approached unit leadership with what the command team called "an updated creative incentives program" designed to connect with soldiers around their actual interests. "The command team thinks eligible soldiers are more aware that they are in their window for reenlistment and engage their leadership and the career counselor earlier to see available opportunities," Tomko said in a written statement.

The incentive is open to any soldier who signs a reenlistment contract between August 1, 2026 and November 14, 2026, the window ending two days before Grand Theft Auto 6 launches worldwide. Soldiers can reenlist for a minimum of two years and up to six. Tomko said the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion has 130 soldiers eligible for the incentive and that 20 had already chosen it as of the most recent count.

The 3rd Infantry Division is headquartered at Fort Stewart in Georgia and is one of the US Army's most-deployed heavy infantry formations. Its reenlistment program is being framed internally as a creative, localized retention tool rather than a recruitment scheme, since every soldier eligible for the pass is already serving, already trained, and already fully qualified.

The program has nonetheless drawn attention well beyond military circles. Coverage in outlets including PC Gamer, The Hill, ABC News, Variety, CBS News, Newsweek, TMZ and PCMag has framed the offer as a sign of how closely tied gaming culture and military retention have become in 2026. The Army's own response to that coverage has been measured: "The heightened interest in the press does not change the purpose of the program: to reward dedicated soldiers for service to their nation," Tomko said.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 16, 2026, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game is being developed by Rockstar Games and is being marketed as the studio's most ambitious open-world release to date, with its trailer debut and a six-hour head start for Netflix subscribers both already generating record online engagement.

The Army has not commented on whether the program will be expanded to other divisions, or whether it will be repeated if the 3rd Infantry Division meets its reenlistment target. Reenlistment incentives are routine across the US Army, and units regularly tailor them to their formations, but the use of a single major entertainment release as the centerpiece of a battalion-wide incentive is unusually public for a service branch that usually keeps retention programs internal.
