The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered Confirms Save Files and Trophies Carry Over to the Free Upgrade
CD Projekt Red confirms that existing saves and unlocked achievements will transfer into the September 29 Remastered build because it is an update to the current client — not a new edition with a fresh trophy list.

CD Projekt Red has cleared up two of the most common questions about The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered ahead of its September 29 launch: existing save files and unlocked trophies or achievements will carry over directly into the upgraded edition.
The studio's global community director, Marcin Momot, addressed the questions on X on September 1, writing that "Save files carry over as it's an update to the existing game" and "Trophies/achievements remain unlocked." Because the Remastered build is being delivered as an update to the existing client, it will not ship with a separate trophy list on PlayStation or a fresh achievement list on Xbox and Steam — players who have already popped those unlocks in the original game will not have to redo them.
The clarification matters for long-time owners of the 2015 RPG, many of whom have hundreds of hours invested across multiple playthroughs and were worried about losing access to their saves once the upgraded edition arrived. The confirmation also means that physical disc owners who already redeemed the game on their current-generation console will see the Remastered upgrade as an update rather than a new product to download separately.
In a separate interview published September 1 with The Game Business, CD Projekt Red joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski said that charging existing owners for the Remastered upgrade "was never a question we asked ourselves," framing the project as an update to the base game that existing players have already paid for. The free upgrade policy was first announced during gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, alongside the reveal of a new paid expansion, Songs of the Past, scheduled for 2027.
The Remastered build itself is co-developed with Hungarian studio Yigsoft and introduces path tracing on PC, a rebuilt combat system, a redesigned skill tree, expanded photo mode, transmogrification, cross-platform mod support, and native Nintendo Switch 2 and Battle.net editions. It launches September 29 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with the Nintendo Switch 2 version available on the same day.
