THE FINALS Crashes After Windows Update — Embark Shares Official Workaround

Some THE FINALS players have been running into crashes following a recent Windows update, and developer Embark Studios has now identified what appears to be the culprit.

According to Embark, the problem started affecting some players after installing Windows update KB5121003. The crashes are connected to the inpoutx64.sys system driver, which changed as part of the Windows update. Embark says it is already working on a long-term solution that it hopes to deploy as soon as possible.

Until that permanent fix arrives, the studio has published an official workaround that involves removing the affected Windows service and driver.

How to fix THE FINALS crash

Players experiencing the issue can open Command Prompt as Administrator and enter the following commands:

sc stop inpoutx64
sc delete inpoutx64

Afterward, navigate to:

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\

Find inpoutx64.sys and delete it. If Windows reports that the file is currently in use, Embark recommends repeating the service-removal commands above before trying again.

Embark also lists an optional registry cleanup. Players can open the Registry Editor using Win + R, enter regedit, and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\inpoutx64

The inpoutx64 registry key can then be deleted before restarting the PC. Embark says completing these steps should allow affected players to launch and play THE FINALS without the crash.

Because these instructions involve deleting a Windows driver and optionally modifying the registry, players should follow Embark's official instructions carefully rather than experimenting with unrelated system files.

The issue arrives during Season 11: Galaxy Masters, which launched on July 9 with the new Galaxy Estates arena, a redesigned melee combat system, bot matches and an overhauled new-player experience.

Season 11 has already received several stability fixes. Hotfix 11.0.1 addressed multiple common crashes shortly after launch, while Hotfix 11.4.1 specifically fixed a Steam startup hang and crash. The newly documented Windows issue, however, is tied directly to Microsoft's KB5121003 update and the inpoutx64.sys driver.

For now, affected PC players can either use Embark's workaround or wait for the studio's permanent solution.
