Serious Sam: Shatterverse Launches Today on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC as Behaviour Interactive and Devolver Digital Kick Off the Franchise's 25th Anniversary
Behaviour Interactive and Devolver Digital ship Serious Sam: Shatterverse on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC today, taking the boomer-shooter franchise into five-player co-op roguelite territory and putting alternate-timeline Sam Stones on a hunt for Uber Mental.

Serious Sam is going multiversal today. Behaviour Interactive and Devolver Digital have shipped Serious Sam: Shatterverse on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store, marking the first major release in the long-running boomer-shooter franchise since Serious Sam 4 in 2020 — and the first built without original series creator Croteam at the development helm.
Behaviour Interactive, the Montreal studio best known for asymmetric horror hit Dead by Daylight, leads the project with Devolver Digital publishing. The franchise's 25th anniversary year sets the backdrop: Shatterverse retools the classic run-and-gun loop into a five-player co-op roguelite, sending a squad of alternate-timeline Sam Stones through hand-crafted arenas under procedurally shifting run conditions. Mental is still the antagonist, only now he's "Uber Mental," the version who has already won in most of the realities the squad is trying to repair.
The structural pitch is the franchise's biggest departure. Rather than randomizing the arenas themselves — which would defeat the map knowledge that has always defined Serious Sam — Shatterverse keeps the arenas authored and shifts the rules inside them. Enemy composition, anomaly placement, and high-risk portal openings all change per run. Permanent unlocks and run modifiers expand what each subsequent attempt can do, in line with the roguelite loop the studio has spent a decade refining in Dead by Daylight. Behaviour's history is in long-tail live-service systems rather than boomer shooters, and the architectural bet is that those systems translate to repeatable co-op arena runs better than they would to a linear campaign.
The launch trailer, which IGN carried as the official release-date trailer on the run-up to launch, leans on the multiverse framing: Orphan Sam with shredding buzzsaws, Retro Sam with decoys, Alien Sam with four arms and quad-wielded weapons, each as a separate playable variant from a different broken reality. The Serious Program — the in-fiction resistance force — pulls them together, and Mental's five lieutenants function as the run-end bosses. Co-op is supported online for up to five players, with solo play also available for anyone who wants the arenas without a squad. On PlayStation 5, online co-op requires an active PS Plus subscription, in line with Sony's standard cross-play online policy.
The Serious Sam website confirms the August 31 launch window with a "Coming August 31 - Wishlist Now" hero banner on the official franchise landing page, and Devolver Digital reiterated the date on Bluesky and across its official channels through the weekend. Pricing has not been confirmed for either market, and Steam lists the game's system requirements as "TBD" as of the launch day — a small but real friction point for early adopters on PC. The Microsoft Store listing is live, the Steam product page has been open since the Xbox Partner Preview reveal back in March, and an early Steam playtest ran in June.
What to watch next is whether Behaviour's first FPS finds its audience outside the existing Dead by Daylight player base, and whether Croteam's blessing translates into commercial continuity for the broader franchise. The studio shift was always the riskiest part of the pitch, and the first weekend of sales — and the Steam review profile that follows — will be the first real test of whether multiversal Serious Sam lands.
