Scott Pilgrim EX – Back in the Band, the new DLC from Tribute Games, is out now on PlayStation 5 and reunites the Sex Bob-omb lineup with three new playable characters: Stephen Stills, Kim Pine, and Knives Chau.

In a new PlayStation Blog post, Tribute Games artists Samantha Lhoir and Artem Samoilov walk through how the studio rebuilt the Character Select screen to welcome the newcomers. Each character's idle animation was designed as a tiny performance, so Kim carries herself with quiet confidence and just enough attitude, Knives Chau radiates restless energy and looks ready to spring into action, and Stephen Stills appears relaxed on the surface, with a subtle flicker of surprise that lasts only a fraction of a second. The team's animation philosophy is to inject personality into every action — a quick facial expression, a secondary motion, or a small visual effect — even if players don't consciously notice it.

Knives Chau was one of the most technically interesting characters to develop, according to Tribute. Designed as a fast hit-and-run fighter, her scarf doubles as both a visual flourish and a weapon, extending the reach of her attacks and emphasising her acrobatic movement. Her kit layers rapid knife strikes into the existing Scott Pilgrim EX combat, giving her a noticeably different rhythm from the rest of the cast. The post stresses that the studio's goal for the DLC wasn't simply to recreate familiar personalities, but to translate them directly into gameplay, animation, and every frame players see on screen.
