Marvel's Wolverine: Insomniac Details a 5.6 TB Japan Scanning Trip Ahead of September 15 PS5 Launch
PlayStation Blog has published a behind-the-scenes deep dive on Insomniac Games' Japan location-scanning trip for Marvel's Wolverine — a 100-mile, multi-biome research mission that produced more than 600 scans and 5.6 TB of data in support of the PS5 launch on September 15.

PlayStation Blog has published a new behind-the-scenes look at how Insomniac Games is shaping the world of Marvel's Wolverine, and the numbers behind the team's Japan location-scanning trip are striking. Over the course of a single research mission ahead of the September 15 PS5 launch, the scanning team logged more than 100 miles on foot, captured over 600 individual scans across four distinct biomes, and walked away with 5.6 TB of raw data and 189,589 reference photos.
The post, written by environment team member Nathaniel Bell, focuses on what Insomniac describes as the most ambitious scanning work it has carried out so far. Unlike earlier trips that minimized travel between stops, the Japan route deliberately spanned several distinct regions. Crews moved from snow-covered mountain terrain in the east to an underground train station, and from bamboo forests to sunbaked urban streets and remote roadside temples — all to feed the PS5 exclusive's environment pipeline.
The team attributes much of the trip's success to planning support from Sony Interactive Entertainment's local teams in Japan, which helped block out level-level asset requests and pinpoint regional targets months before the crew ever boarded a plane. The route was tuned for biome variety rather than efficiency, with the environment art group trading faster drive times for denser, more useful asset variety.
The practical work was heavy. Crews often carried roughly 20 pounds of scanning gear between locations, captured high-resolution photo references in addition to the scans themselves, and dealt with typical field failures — three broken pieces of kit (two cables and a plastic case) plus one shattered phone glass back.
Beyond raw geometry, Bell emphasizes that the trip's cultural payoff mattered as much as the scan data. Being on the ground let the team observe how structures are built and weathered, how materials age in different climates, and how local cultural details show up in everyday signage, infrastructure, and streetscape. Even fictional locations in Marvel's Wolverine will lean on that firsthand research, the post explains, with the goal of building places that feel grounded and "thoughtfully inspired" rather than stitched together from generic library assets.
For fans tracking the road to launch, the post closes with a reminder that Marvel's Wolverine is targeting a September 15 release on PS5, with wishlists and pre-orders already live on the PlayStation Store.
The full breakdown, including route-planning notes and the team's biome-by-biome methodology, is available now on PlayStation Blog. Pre-orders and platform details are on the official Marvel's Wolverine page on PlayStation.com.
