Kingdom Hearts 4 Targets Late 2027 as New Trailer Reveals Coco World and Disney+ Anime
After years of waiting, Kingdom Hearts fans finally have something much more concrete to look forward to. Square Enix and Disney have confirmed that Kingdom Hearts 4 is targeting a late 2027 release, while a new extended trailer has revealed fresh gameplay, returning characters and a major new Disney world.
The announcements came as part of Disney’s D23 2026 celebrations, where Kingdom Hearts received a substantial spotlight ahead of the franchise’s 25th anniversary.
Kingdom Hearts 4 Is Coming in 2027
The biggest piece of news is the release window. Kingdom Hearts 4 is now officially scheduled to launch in 2027, giving fans their clearest indication yet of when Sora’s next major adventure will arrive.
The game is planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
That means Kingdom Hearts 4 will arrive roughly eight years after Kingdom Hearts 3 originally launched in 2019, making the wait between numbered entries one of the longest in the history of the franchise.
Series creator Tetsuya Nomura and co-director Tai Yasue also indicated during the D23 presentation that development is progressing according to plan, while the promotional campaign surrounding the game is only beginning to ramp up.
Pixar’s Coco Is the First Major New Disney World
The new footage also answered one of the biggest questions surrounding Kingdom Hearts 4: which Disney and Pixar properties will Sora visit this time?
Pixar’s Coco is officially joining the game.
The trailer shows Sora exploring the colorful Land of the Dead, complete with an appearance designed to match the visual style of the movie. It is an especially natural fit for Kingdom Hearts, with Coco’s themes of death, memory and maintaining connections with those who have been lost fitting surprisingly well with the RPG series’ own increasingly complicated mythology.
Nomura explained that the development team looks for Disney properties that can create interesting synergy with Kingdom Hearts’ gameplay, with Coco ultimately standing out as a strong choice.
And it appears to be far more than a brief cameo.
The extended footage shown during the Kingdom Hearts panel included additional gameplay from the Coco-inspired environment, suggesting it will be a fully realized world rather than a small sequence.
Mickey Is Getting a Very Different Kind of World
Coco was not the only surprise.
Disney and Square Enix also revealed a new “Paper Mickey Mouse” world featuring a completely different visual and gameplay style. Mickey will become playable as he travels through a storybook-like environment.
Gameplay mechanics shown for the world include moving through cracks in walls, transforming into an airplane and solving environmental puzzles.
It is a noticeable departure from the traditional Kingdom Hearts formula and could indicate that Square Enix is willing to experiment much more aggressively with individual Disney worlds in Kingdom Hearts 4.
Sora Remains Trapped in Quadratum
Kingdom Hearts 4 continues Sora’s story following the events of Kingdom Hearts 3 and its subsequent story developments.
Sora finds himself in Quadratum, a mysterious city heavily inspired by modern-day Tokyo and particularly Shibuya. The location was already one of the defining elements of Kingdom Hearts 4’s original reveal, offering a much more realistic visual style than the colorful environments usually associated with the franchise.
The new footage confirms that Quadratum remains central to the game.
Donald Duck, Goofy and King Mickey are also returning, alongside several familiar faces from the wider Kingdom Hearts universe.
Maleficent is another character fans should keep an eye on. Disney and Square Enix have teased that the classic Sleeping Beauty villain will once again play an important role in the upcoming story.
Kingdom Hearts Is Also Becoming an Anime
The future of Kingdom Hearts now extends beyond gaming.
Disney has officially announced that an original Kingdom Hearts animated series is in development for Disney+ and Disney Channel.
Rather than simply retelling one of the existing games, the project is expected to feature an original story set within the Kingdom Hearts universe.
Perhaps most importantly for longtime fans, Tetsuya Nomura is heavily involved in the production.
No release date has been announced for the series yet, and Disney has not revealed exactly where its story fits into the increasingly elaborate Kingdom Hearts timeline.
Given the franchise we are talking about, however, fans will probably want to watch it just in case it ends up containing information essential to understanding Kingdom Hearts 5 in another decade.
A Huge 25th Anniversary Is Taking Shape
The timing of all these announcements is hardly accidental.
Kingdom Hearts celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2027. The original game debuted on PlayStation 2 in Japan in March 2002 and ultimately created one of gaming’s strangest and most successful collaborations.
A series that began with the seemingly bizarre idea of combining Final Fantasy-style characters with Disney worlds has grown into a major franchise of its own.
Disney executive Sean Shoptaw recently revealed that Kingdom Hearts is one of only nine Disney video game franchises to have generated more than $1 billion in retail sales.
Kingdom Hearts 4, an animated series and additional anniversary celebrations therefore make 2027 potentially one of the biggest years the franchise has ever seen.
The Long Wait Finally Has an End in Sight
There are still plenty of mysteries surrounding Kingdom Hearts 4.
We do not know every Disney world, we do not have an exact launch date, and trying to predict what Tetsuya Nomura has planned for the story is probably an exercise in futility.
But after a long period in which information about Kingdom Hearts 4 arrived painfully slowly, the situation has changed dramatically.
A 2027 release window is official. Coco is joining the adventure. Quadratum remains a major part of Sora’s journey. Mickey is getting an experimental playable world. And an entirely new animated Kingdom Hearts project is being developed alongside the game.
For Kingdom Hearts fans, the next chapter finally feels real.
