Geoff Keighley Lifts the Curtain on Gamescom Opening Night Live Trailer Selection — Some Slots Are Free, Others Are Paid

Geoff Keighley has confirmed that Gamescom Opening Night Live mixes editorial placements with paid slots, and named the games locked in for next week’s show, including Gears of War: E-Day, Final Fantasy 7: Revelation, Ananta, Metro 2039 and a new Witcher 3 expansion.

Geoff Keighley Lifts the Curtain on Gamescom Opening Night Live Trailer Selection — Some Slots Are Free, Others Are Paid

GAMESCOM 2026 — Two weeks after Kotaku and Aftermath reported that Game Awards and Opening Night Live slots had been sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars, Gamescom host Geoff Keighley has offered his most detailed account yet of how trailers actually make it into the show. Speaking at a Gamescom press pre-briefing on August 20, Keighley said Opening Night Live combines free editorial placements with paid slots, and insisted that the editorial track still drives the bulk of the showcase.

"In much the same way companies will purchase a booth at Gamescom and buy space, they'll secure space inside of the show," Keighley said when GamesIndustry.biz asked about the cost of placing a trailer. He added that editorial selection is real and runs across every show he produces. "There are games that get selected for editorial value in the show. There's also a lot of independent games that we take. You'll see many small teams, games made by three, four people, that get selected to be inside of ONL because we believe in those titles, and we believe in those teams and want to support them."

The clarification follows reporting from Aftermath last summer that a 60-second Opening Night Live trailer slot allegedly cost €102,500 ($119,600), and a December 2025 Kotaku report that put the equivalent Game Awards slot at up to $450,000. Game managing director Felix Falk, who also took part in the pre-briefing, pushed back on the idea that the digital show is primarily a paid product. "The vast majority of everything we do on the digital side is not paid and is not advertorial or advertisement," he said. "It's free for our partners."

Both speakers framed Opening Night Live as an extension of Gamescom's on-floor exhibitor presence. "The companies that we're working with are already at Gamescom in some form as an exhibitor or something like that, and this is maybe a digital extension of what they're doing with their booths," Keighley said. Asked whether only games he personally selects get in for free, he called it "a group decision."

Keighley also spelled out how a trailer earns an editorial slot. "Part of the thing with the editorial selection is really it's the scale of the news or the announcement. Everyone wants to tune in to be surprised with something brand new and exciting. Companies and partners often earn the ability to have editorial places with the level of news that people are bringing to the show." He acknowledged that the show also features games shipping a few weeks later, describing those appearances as closer to marketing than editorial reveals.

The pre-briefing doubled as a soft reveal for the Opening Night Live lineup. Keighley confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day will appear on the show, alongside Final Fantasy 7: Revelation, Ananta, Metro 2039, and additional details on a new expansion for The Witcher 3. Tim Endres, Gamescom director at Koelnmesse, used the same session to confirm that Games Done Quick will appear at Gamescom for the first time this year, raising money for the Gaming for Democracy initiative.

Opening Night Live streams on Tuesday, August 25, ahead of the Gamescom 2026 floor show in Cologne. Keighley and Falk both framed the digital showcase as a hybrid tool for reaching a global audience beyond the 350,000 attendees expected on site. Falk was explicit that monetizing the stream is not the goal. "It's also economically not important for us to make money with the digital shows first, but to give reach to our partners who are at Gamescom," he said.

The full interview and additional lineup details will be published by Gamescom partners ahead of Opening Night Live on August 25.
