Fallout 4 and Skyrim Updates Put Modded Saves on Notice
Bethesda is preparing new updates for Fallout 4 and Skyrim, with players advised to save their mod load orders before the patches arrive.

Bethesda is preparing new updates for Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and players who use mods are being advised to take precautions before installing them.
The immediate warning concerns a Fallout 4 patch scheduled for August 18. Bethesda says the update will focus on general Creations improvements, while recommending that players log into a save or manually preserve their current mod load order before the patch goes live. The guidance is particularly relevant for heavily modded installations, where changes to Creation-related systems can affect compatibility.
The warning follows a history of Fallout 4 updates causing problems for modded saves. The 2024 next-generation update was widely criticized for breaking mods, and later patches created additional issues for parts of the community. Bethesda’s official support post contains the current Fallout 4 guidance and the recommendation to save a load order before updating: Bethesda Game Studios on X.
The latest reporting also points to an incoming Skyrim update, although Bethesda has not published a detailed public change list in the material currently available. Players should therefore treat the Skyrim timing and contents separately from the confirmed Fallout 4 Creations patch, keep backups of important saves, and consider disabling automatic updates if their mod setup is difficult to restore.
This is maintenance news rather than a new content drop, but it is meaningful for players whose libraries depend on extensive mod lists. Until Bethesda publishes full patch notes, the safest approach is to back up saves and record the active load order before either game updates.
