Cloud Imperium Pushes Squadron 42 to Q2 2027, Says GTA 6 Buzz Forced the Move

Chris Roberts confirms in a new Letter From The Chairman that Squadron 42 will not ship in 2026 as previously promised, with Cloud Imperium Games now targeting Q2 2027 and warning that GTA 6’s media wave will dominate November.

Cloud Imperium Pushes Squadron 42 to Q2 2027, Says GTA 6 Buzz Forced the Move

Chris Roberts has confirmed that Squadron 42, the long-running single-player spin-off of Star Citizen, will no longer ship in 2026 and has slipped to Q2 2027, with the studio chief directly citing the upcoming GTA 6 release window as the reason for moving the date.

The update was published today, August 27, 2026, in a new "Letter From The Chairman" on the official Roberts Space Industries (RSI) website. In it, Roberts says Cloud Imperium Games had originally planned to release Squadron 42 in Q4 2026 around the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo (IAE) and had previously committed to a 2026 window at CitizenCon 2024, but has now pushed the game into the second quarter of next year.

"There is no way I want to launch my spiritual successor to Wing Commander, a game that has had twelve years of blood, sweat and tears invested into it, launching into the attention buzz saw of GTA 6," Roberts writes. "While GTA 6 isn't launching on PC this November, pretty much all outlets and most content creators will be all over it, not leaving a lot of room for other coverage. We have taken a look at the release windows at the start of 2027, and decided that Q2 provides a better time for Squadron 42 to release."

Roberts adds that "the sooner we finish Squadron 42, the sooner the majority of the development staff can focus on bringing Star Citizen to 1.0," and that the studio's current staff split is now 55% in Squadron 42's favour, with 611 staff working across the four studios outside of the CTG operations team. He also says some hardcore backers and influencers will get hands-on time with the campaign in October.

Squadron 42 was first announced alongside Star Citizen's 2012 Kickstarter campaign with a planned 2014 launch and has been repeatedly delayed since. It is the single-player, celebrity-voiced space combat story set in the same 'Verse as the long-running persistent universe alpha, with a cast that has included Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Ben Mendelsohn, and John Rhys-Davies over its development history.

The Q2 2027 window is the latest in a string of shifting targets for the title. Roberts had reiterated the 2026 goal at last year's CitizenCon, when Cloud Imperium notably chose not to bring Squadron 42 to the show floor, citing a desire to avoid "the distraction of CitizenCon."

In the same letter, Roberts pushes back on the long-running narrative that Squadron 42 is consuming most of the studio's resources at the expense of Star Citizen. He says the split was approximately 50/50 between the two projects in recent years and that gameplay engineering teams spent much of 2024 porting features built for Squadron 42 back into Star Citizen, including work shown at the 2023 CitizenCon in Los Angeles. He says the studio shifted the balance back toward Squadron 42 in late 2024 and is now "55% to 45% in Squadron's favour" to ship the campaign "bug free, polished and optimized."

The decision lands as Rockstar's GTA 6 is confirmed for a November 19, 2026 console launch, with a Netflix "extended look" aired today and a steady drip of pre-release coverage expected to dominate gaming media through the holiday season. Other studios have already begun moving out of that window, including CI Games, which recently delayed Lords of the Fallen 2 to early 2027.

PC Gamer and Massively Overpowered both reported on the delay today, citing the same Letter From The Chairman. Roberts closes his note by acknowledging the impact on backers: "I know a lot of you will be disappointed to not be playing Squadron 42 at the end of this year, but it is the best thing for the project as it is truly something special and so needs to the opportunity to have the focus of the wider gaming world."

The full statement, including Roberts's comments on the Star Citizen 4.10 alpha, engine choice, and live-development priorities, is available in the official Letter From The Chairman on the Roberts Space Industries comm-link.
