Blizzard Reveals Overwatch's Doctrine Vampire Support Hero at BlizzCon 2026, Locks Season 5 for October 6 With Sombra and Roadhog Reworks

Blizzard used the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony on September 12 to open the next chapter of Overwatch, unveiling Doctrine, a vampire-inspired Support hero tied to Doomfist, locking Season 5 for October 6 and confirming two long-rumored hero reworks: Sombra moving from Damage to Support, and Roadhog getting a full overhaul that retires his signature one-shot combo.

Doctrine was introduced through an animated short set at Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, a supermax prison built inside an Icelandic volcano, where Doomfist leads a Talon strike team to break him out. That same location becomes Season 5's new Escort map, the second entry in the Watchpoint map line and a direct narrative tie-in to Doctrine's origin. In combat, Doctrine wields a life-draining scepter, summons bat-like drones and uses an Infuse mechanic that scales with damage dealt; his perks can shift the balance between maximum health, healing and charge speed, and he will be locked from Ranked play on launch while Blizzard evaluates his unusual Support toolkit in competitive queues.

Players do not have to wait for Season 5 to try him. A limited Hero Trial runs from September 12 through September 14, 2026, giving the full roster a hands-on preview before his official unlock. BlizzCon attendees can play Doctrine on the show floor, and the trial is open to all players at home.

Season 5 itself closes out The Reign of Talon, the first year-long narrative arc in Overwatch history, and Blizzard says the finale drops a tease for Hero 55 and a glimpse of where 2027 is headed. Alongside Doctrine, the patch brings major reworks for two of the original roster: Sombra moves from the Damage role to Support, a structural change Blizzard framed as one of the biggest hero updates in the game's history, while Roadhog is rebalanced to contribute more to his team without leaning on his one-shot kill routine, though the rest of his kit is still under wraps.

Outside of the hero changes, Season 5 also brings the return of the Dokiwatch cosmetic line, a new in-game LE SSERAFIM encore collaboration running ahead of the group's closing-stage performance on Sunday, and the first-ever BlizzCon halftime show by YOASOBI during Day 2 of the Overwatch World Cup, where eight finalist teams will play live from Anaheim. QuestWatch, Overwatch's first live tabletop RPG one-shot, follows on September 13 at 12:00 PM Pacific.
